We regularly receive requests from communities to work with them in order that they might complete a much needed project or realise a community dream.  All of the projects we get involved with are true partnerships, with the HQ Foundation and communities working side by side to achieve the desired results. So far we have helped build and equip a library and computer lab for a rural government school.

Health Camps

In 2013 Himalayan Quests organised and ran its first series of free multi-discipline health camps in rural villages in the mid west of Nepal, offering locals access to healthcare not readily accessible in the area. Treating individuals who would otherwise go untreated and providing valuable health education, these health camps make a powerful and lasting change to the lives of the thousands of patients that visit.

Over the years we have offered consultations in general health, eyes, dental, women’s health and physiotherapy. More recently we have been focusing on the three areas where our patients are least likely to seek medical help and thus we can make the most significant difference – eyes, dental and women’s health.

After each camp we organise free cataract surgery for those that need it, restoring the gift of sight and in some cases, the ability to work once again.

The mid west health camps are now established as an annual event and where budget permits, we also run camps in other rural communities across the country.

Rural Community Projects

So far we have helped build and equip a library and computer lab for a rural government school; funded the equipment for a much needed and well used birthing centre, substantially reducing the number of hours ladies in labour have to travel to give birth in a supported and safe environment; help build permanent rock trails, replacing slippery mud paths, in villages where there is no road access; worked with a community farm building chicken coops and pig pens, thus providing the younger generation with a sustainable income and a reason to stay in the village.

2015 Earthquake Rebuild

On 25th April 2015, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal, resulting in loss of life and massive destruction of homes, schools, health facilities and general infrastructure.

In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, we focused on emergency relief aid, delivering tarpaulins, corrugated metal sheets, foam mattresses, soap and essential food supplies to communities off the beaten track where everything was lost and no help from the larger organisations forthcoming. We also ran mini health clinics in each village we visited, alongside education sessions on the importance of health and hygiene best practice and how to make a simple drop-pit toilet in the hope of stopping open defecation.

We then moved on to the next phase, focusing on education and started building temporary classrooms from tin sheets and reclaimed materials to replaced those destroyed in the quake. This enabled children to continue with their education in a safe environment and regain a sense of normalcy in this time of upheaval and uncertainty. We also provided school uniforms, books, bags, pens and pencils for the children.

According to the Nepal Ministry of Education’s assessment, as many as 8,620 schools were affected, while 19,692 classrooms were entirely destroyed, 11,935 classrooms were majorly damaged, and another 17,434 had minor damage.

We are now focusing on rebuilding permanent classrooms and rural health posts one school and community at a time.
