A Library is Born

This post looks back toward a moment that had a lot of meaning for both Sally and me… the creation of the Shree Balshikshya Niketan Lower Secondary School library in Gabde, near Ale Gaun.

It was a joy to have a simple idea turned into reality by the local community. We spent time before the trip trying to determine the best ways for the project to take wing, and it became apparent that it would work best if it sprang from the community. And it truly did just that.

As the 2015 medical camp started, carpenters arrived as did the materials to build book shelves and eventually a prototype computer table. It did not take long before the carpenters, the youth of Ale Guan and key local people stepped in to turn a vacant room full of dusty papers, unread books and broken furniture into a learning center that can serve the needs of students well into the future.

beyond all dreams either of us had for the learning center. And while saws and hammers were busily creating something from very little, Sally and the teachers at the school immersed themselves in creating a system to catalogue learning materials that are and will become part of the library as it grows.
