Day 1 – Getting in the groove

Providing free medical care in rural Nepal

With the sun just rising from the mists, we set to work registering waiting patients of all ages for the first full and official day of consultations. Elderly couples came together and left with sunglasses, mothers came with children and left with medicine, men and women came with ailments and received treatments, but most importantly, each patient came away with new knowledge of how to keep their bodies fit and healthy long after today’s camp. Many of the patients are eager to be seen and will continue on for multiple visits even after having four teeth extracted in one go. As such, our doctors are busy delivering treatments and we needed to order an extra $400 worth of meds to meet demand.

In total, 196 patients were seen and 295 consultations performed. There were 7 new cataract patients identified, 30 teeth extracted, and numerous treatments given for the various ailments, aches and pains seen in the physio, general health and women’s departments.

Outside of the consultations and treatments, we were also able to serve the greater community today through the education of community health workers. Seven ladies came to the camp to meet with our midwives and share knowledge. This was an excellent opportunity to meet our goal of providing long-term and sustainable care to those living outside the reaches of modern health-care systems. In these places, medicine is not always available, making knowledge and understanding of medical issues even more critical to saving and improving lives.

Tomorrow, we are expecting even more patients to be registered and treated as word spreads and people make their way to the camp. We know that, like today, they will come with hopeful eyes and grateful smiles and we again we will deliver to them the best care we can offer.
