Just before 1pm today, a beautiful baby boy was delivered in the birthing center funded by donations through One World One Heart in April 2015! The camp’s midwives Deepa, Mamata and Sunita where all there to aid with the birth as the center’s own midwives were at work. The baby weighed in at 2.6kg and looked healthy and warm in his mother’s arms. Relatives and well-wishers who came to see him gave small gifts of money they placed in his tiny fingers. He and his mom got to go home to his two older siblings within the next few hours.

For all the people, in and out of the village, that have worked so hard to make the center a possibility just over a year ago, the birth was an incredible moment to see the work that is being done there and the care that is provided for mother and child.
Back on the school grounds, day 2 of camp in Sirkot was in full swing. Young and old patients queued up in front of registration in everything from school uniforms to suits to traditional clothing with golden jewelry dangling from noses and ears and wrapped around wrists and fingers. All together 323 people were registered and many more consultations completed.

In room four, doctors Bibek and Marian attended to an elderly woman who has come to camp on the back of her relatives for the past four years. Unfortunately, Dr. Marian recognized a case of pulmonary fibrosis in the elderly woman and suspects this will be here her last year. Dr. Marian also saw another woman, this time quite young, who needed help getting to camp because her knee had popped and become painful after a fall. She was given a brace for a suspected meniscus injury and instructed to return to camp the last day to check on her progress.

Today was also a big day for education. The dentists and dental hygienists taught two classes on dental hygiene out on the school grounds and the midwives led a class with 52 young women about reproductive health. In the dental class, the students all received toothbrushes and in the women’s health class, more reusable sanitary napkins were given to the school age girls.

Finally as camp came to an end we all had a chance to enjoy the views of Dhaulagiri, the 7th highest peak in the world, before the sun set and the cold night returned.
